About
Gardening to Wellness is a multi-media, community-centered course that uses the power of nature and gardening to cultivate wellness across body, mind, and spirit. This course is built on the belief that we don't just do gardening—we interact with a biological and cultural legacy that is millions of years old. As humans, our health has always been shaped by both our genes and the environments and cultures we grow up in. This biocultural perspective reminds us that our connection to nature isn’t just emotional—it’s evolutionary. Gardening taps into a deep-rooted part of what it means to be human. By the end of this journey, you’ll see your garden not as a chore, but as a pharmacy, a sanctuary, and a gateway to holistic wellness. Rooted in evidence-based frameworks like the Wellness Garden Compass and supported by research in human-nature connection, participants explore how gardens can support physical health, emotional resilience, social connection, and environmental awareness. Whether you're a seasoned gardener or just curious about how a garden can transform your life, this course offers an inspiring journey to “living fit”—starting just outside your back door. Developed by the Pamlico Rose Institute in partnership with AmeriCorps and local host sites, the course combines engaging video lessons, hands-on activities, and science-backed strategies to help individuals and communities thrive.
